About the Department

The Department of Commerce and Management is one of the oldest departments of Netaji Subhas Open University. The Department started its journey in the year 1998, initially with UG Course-B.Com and PG Course- M. Com in 2004 and MBA in 2024. Subsequently Ph.D. Programme in 2020.Earlier it was under the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. In 2015, after trifurcation, the Department of Commerce was transferred to School of Professional Studies and subsequently it renamed as Commerce and Management in 2023. Some of the fundamental objectives of the department are-reaching the unreached (through NSOU App, Zoom, Google Meet, WhatsApp, etc.); to provide qualitative commerce education; to create "Interest in Commerce" related subjects; to make the learners "Creative and Research Oriented"; to make them employable; to inculcate in them a sound ethical and moral values for a holistic living; to encourage self-evaluation, personality development, etc.; last, but not the least to dedicate ourselves for continuous development through lifelonglearning. Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) has been started in this department from the academic session 2021-22.

The CBCS provides an opportunity for the learners to choose courses from the prescribed courses comprising of core, elective, skill enhancement or ability enhancement courses. Thus, the fundamental aim of this Department of Commerce and Management is to inculcate a contemporary knowledge in commerce and management related courses and to develop proficient, knowledgeable human resources in this field as well. It also emphasizes practical knowledge and skills in the area of accounting, taxation and management as well.
