The academic journey of the social work program in NSOU began from the year 2005. The program runs under the aegis of School of Professional Studies and is designed to offer Social Work education meaningfully by imparting both practical as well as theoretical knowledge to its learners and create professionals who would work in the development sector. While conducting their Field Work or by getting exposure to various Research activities the learners directly come in contact with the various communities and develop understanding about ways topromote social justice and empowerment and also ensurethe sustainable development of the community peopleby applying Social Work Methods. Not only in the development sector, the learners are also trained to appear for various competitive examinations and even go for higher education. Our alimony records reflects that our learners are heading prestigious organization and successfully holding respectable positions in various Government Department. Quite a number of students have developed academic inclination and have cracked their NET examinations and are also pursuing their PhD and even opting for Post Doctoral Degree.
This has been possible because of the remarkable contribution made by our Academic Counsellors, Course Writers and Editorsand other stakeholders who are so much committed towards our learners and also fulfilling their assignments as and when desired. The Department of Social work is blessed to have the most competent Board of Studies members from the Social Work Departments of renowned university from all over West Bengal who have contributed in developing the syllabus for Social Work curriculum. The syllabus has been revised to make it more contemporary by including all the relevant issues and topics. In order to reach and cater to the larger population of West Bengal the self learning material are written both in English and Bengali languages. The Social Work department has been engaged in organising various outreach programmes and workshops from time to time not only forits learners but also to sensitise the communities on various social issues. The Department would start Ph.D. programme near future and keep developing strategies to make the course even better.
